Q-1-99 — Generic Validation Error

A YAML validation error that does not fit any of the more specific Q-1-XX categories.

What this means

Quarto’s YAML validator has structured error variants for the common failure modes — missing required property (Q-1-10), type mismatch (Q-1-11), invalid enum value (Q-1-12), and so on. This code is the fallback for validation errors that fall outside those variants. The terminal message includes a free-text description from the validator that explains the specific failure.

If you see this code, the validation system has a problem it could not classify into one of the structured codes. The structured codes are preferable because they enable better hints and tooling; seeing Q-1-99 in real configuration is a hint that a specific code may need to be added.

Why this happens

This code fires in two situations:

  • An edge case the validator did not anticipate. Some combination of schema and input produced an error the validator could not assign to a known variant.
  • An infrastructural problem inside a schema — for example a schema construct the validator has not yet implemented support for. Future Quarto releases will gradually narrow this code’s use as such gaps are filled.

How to fix

Read the free-text message in the error. It typically names the specific problem with enough detail to identify what to change in the YAML.

If the message does not point at a clear fix, treat the Q-1-99 appearance itself as a Quarto bug: the validator should have produced one of the structured codes. Reporting the YAML that triggered the error helps Quarto’s maintainers add a structured variant for the case.
