An image construct opens with ![ but the closing ](url) does not appear before the end of the block.

What this means

Markdown images take the form ![alt text](url). This error fires when an ![ opens an image construct but the parser reaches the end of the block before finding the closing ] and its associated (url).

Why this happens

  • A deleted close: the closing ] or the (url) portion was removed by an edit.
  • A literal ![ that was not meant to start an image.

How to fix

Complete the image with ](url), or escape the opening bracket:

\![not an image]
