Q-12-20 — Listing Record Path Names No Document
An inline
contents:record’spath:has a document extension but names no document the project renders; the item keeps the link as written.
What this means
An inline contents: record’s path: can name a project document,
in which case the record’s fields overlay that document’s hydrated
item (its title, description, date, and so on fill in whatever the
record doesn’t set):
listing:
contents:
- title: Get started
path: download.qmdThis warning fires when path: looks like it should name a document
— it has a Markdown/notebook extension (.qmd, .md, .Rmd,
.ipynb) — but resolves to no document the project actually renders.
The item still gets built, using only the record’s own fields, and
the link is emitted exactly as written; it may point nowhere.
Why this happens
- A typo in the path or file name.
- The wrong directory.
path:resolves against the directory of the file the listing is written in, not the project root — a path written assuming project-root-relative resolution can miss. - The file exists but is excluded from rendering — for example
by
project.render, or because its name or directory starts with_or.. Such a file is not a documentQ-12-20can link to, even though it exists on disk.
How to fix
- Correct the path. If the resolved path in the diagnostic names a same-named document elsewhere in the project, the message suggests it.
Anchor the path at the project root with a leading
/if it was written assuming a different base directory:listing: contents: - title: Get started path: /docs/download.qmd- If the record was never meant to link anywhere — just a card with
its own title, description, and custom fields — drop
path:entirely.
