Q-5-19 — Unknown project profile
An active profile matches no
_quarto-<name>.yml, no_environment-<name>, and nothing declared underprofile:.
What this means
A profile named staging can affect a project in three ways:
- a
_quarto-staging.ymloverlay, merged over_quarto.yml - an
_environment-stagingfile, contributing environment variables - a declaration under
profile:in_quarto.yml
The profile you activated matches none of them, so activating it changes nothing. Almost always this means the name is misspelled — you asked for a configuration that does not exist, and got the default one without noticing.
The render continues with whatever configuration was in effect.
Why this happens
- A typo in
--profile, inQUARTO_PROFILE, or inprofile.default. - The overlay file is misnamed. It must be exactly
_quarto-<name>.yml—_quarto.staging.ymlandquarto-staging.ymldo not match. - The overlay is in the wrong directory. It belongs next to
_quarto.ymlat the project root. - A profile used only for conditional content. If
stagingexists purely sowhen-profile="staging"can key off it, there is no overlay file to find — see the fix below.
How to fix
If you meant to select an overlay, check the file name against the profile name:
_quarto.yml
_quarto-staging.yml ← selected by --profile staging
If the profile exists only for conditional content, declare it so Quarto knows it is real:
profile:
group:
- [production, staging]or, if it is the profile you want active by default:
profile:
default: stagingWith the declaration in place, when-profile="staging" works and the
warning stops.
