Q-5-40 — Algolia Search Is Misconfigured

website.search.algolia needs application-id, search-only-api-key, and index-name. The Algolia settings are ignored and the built-in search index is used instead.

What this means

Using Algolia as the search backend requires three values so the browser can query your index:

# _quarto.yml
website:
  search:
    algolia:
      index-name: my-site
      application-id: ABC123DEF4
      search-only-api-key: 0123456789abcdef0123456789abcdef

When one of them is missing, Quarto cannot build a working Algolia client, so it warns and renders the site with its own Pagefind-based search instead. Nothing else about the site changes. Quarto 1 emitted the same warning but still wired the Algolia scripts, which left the search box broken in the browser.

How to fix it

Add the missing key, or remove the algolia block to use the built-in search. The search-only API key is safe to publish; never use an admin key here.
