Multiple input paths were given, but they are not part of a Quarto project.

What this means

Quarto accepts two shapes of invocation: render a single standalone file (quarto render report.qmd) or render some subset of a project’s files (which requires the files to live inside a _quarto.yml-rooted directory). This error fires when you pass more than one path and none of them resolves to a project.

Multiple standalone files at once are not currently supported.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • A glob expansion (quarto render *.qmd) that ran in a directory with no _quarto.yml.
  • A script that batches files with no enclosing project.

How to fix

Two options:

  • Render the files one at a time with separate invocations.
  • Create a _quarto.yml in the directory containing the files so they are recognized as a project. The minimum contents are an empty file or a single project: block.
