Q-5-18 — Project type not yet implemented
project.type: manuscriptis accepted for forward compatibility but renders with default-project behavior.
What this means
Quarto 1 supports a manuscript project type. Quarto 2 does not
implement it yet. (book projects are implemented — see the
book projects guide — so this
warning no longer applies to them.)
The type name is still accepted, so a Quarto 1 manuscript project does not fail outright on it. But nothing implements the behavior: your documents render individually, without manuscript-specific structure such as notebook linking or MECA packaging.
The render succeeds. The output is a set of standalone HTML documents rather than a manuscript.
Why this happens
- A Quarto 1 manuscript project rendered with Quarto 2.
- A project started from a Quarto 1 manuscript template.
Nothing is wrong with the configuration — the warning reports a gap in this Quarto version.
How to fix
There is no configuration that makes manuscript behavior work in this version. Your options are:
Keep using Quarto 1 for this project. For a manuscript that depends on notebook linking or MECA packaging, this is the practical answer today.
Switch to website if what you need is mainly navigation between
documents. A website project gives you a sidebar, search, and
cross-document links, which covers a good deal of what a manuscript
provides:
project:
type: website
website:
sidebar:
contents:
- index.qmd
- chapter-01.qmd
- chapter-02.qmdYou lose manuscript-specific notebook linking and packaging.
Leave it as is. The configuration stays valid, and the warning disappears when manuscript is implemented.
