Q-12-11 — Mixed Category Modes On One Page

Two or more listings on the same page declare different categories: modes; the first non-disabled mode in declaration order wins for the rendered sidebar.

What this means

The categories: key on a listing controls how categories are collected and displayed in the categories sidebar — possible modes include the default tag-cloud-style view, an unnumbered list, a numbered count view, and outright disabling the sidebar. Quarto renders one sidebar per page, so when multiple listings on the same page disagree on the mode, only one mode can apply.

The chosen mode is the first non-disabled one in declaration order. The other listings still contribute their items to the category set, but their preferred display mode is overridden.

Why this happens

A page hosts more than one listing (a listings: array, or a host page that includes a sub-document also configured as a listing), and the entries declare different categories: values.

How to fix

Decide which mode you want for the page’s sidebar and set the same categories: value on every listing that contributes to it. If a listing should not affect the sidebar, set its categories: false.
