Unknown Tag Component
Q-1-21 — Unknown Tag Component
A YAML tag in the configuration includes a component name Quarto does not recognize.
What this means
Quarto extends YAML with a small family of tags that control how
configuration values are merged across layers (_quarto.yml,
profile files, project metadata) and how the value should be
interpreted (as markdown, a plain string, a path, a glob, an
expression). The recognized components are:
- merge operations:
prefer,concat - interpretations:
md,str,path,glob,expr
A tag combines one or more of these with underscores, for example
!prefer_md or !concat_path. This warning fires when a tag
contains a component outside that list.
The warning does not block the build. Quarto preserves the unknown component so downstream handling can decide whether to act on it, and proceeds with whatever it could recognize.
Why this happens
Common patterns:
- Typos of recognized names:
!prefrefor!prefer,!markfor!md,!filepathfor!path. - English-language forms of the canonical names:
!markdown,!string,!file,!expression. Quarto suggests the canonical name in the warning when the typo is recognizable. - Forward-looking tags that have not been implemented yet.
How to fix
Replace the unknown component with the canonical name. The warning message includes a “Did you mean …?” hint for the typos Quarto recognizes; otherwise pick from the list above based on what you intended.
If the tag was intentional and the unknown component is meaningful to a downstream consumer, the warning is informational and you can leave the tag in place.
