Q-9-1 — XML Syntax Error

The XML parser rejected the input as syntactically invalid.

What this means

Quarto parses XML in a few places — most prominently when loading a CSL citation style — and uses a strict XML parser that rejects malformed input rather than guessing. This error fires when the parser cannot make sense of what it is reading: a stray <, an unterminated entity, an attribute value missing its closing quote, and so on.

The message names the underlying issue and, where the parser can pinpoint it, a byte offset into the document.

Why this happens

Common causes:

 • An unescaped <, &, or > in textual content. These must be written as <, &, >.
 • An attribute value missing a quote (name=value instead of name="value").
 • A CDATA or comment block that was never closed.

How to fix

Read the byte offset in the message — it usually points within a few characters of the actual problem. If you cannot spot the issue by inspection, paste the document into an XML validator (any browser will do for a quick check) and fix the issues it reports.
