Q-13-5 — Sidebar auto: Ignored

A sidebar auto: entry was ignored because the document is being rendered without a project index.

What this means

Sidebars support an auto: shorthand: instead of listing every document by hand, the entry says “include every renderable document under this directory” and Quarto expands it against the project’s index at render time. This warning fires when an auto: entry is encountered but no project index is available — typically because the document is being rendered standalone, not as part of a project build.

The render still succeeds; the auto: entry simply expands to nothing.

Why this happens

Most often: rendering a single file (quarto render report.qmd) that has been authored as part of a project. The file’s sidebar configuration is processed, but standalone renders do not build a project index, so auto: has nothing to expand against.

How to fix

Render the document as part of a project build (quarto render with no arguments, from inside the project root). If you do want to render a single file standalone with the sidebar present, replace the auto: entry with an explicit list of documents.
