Q-14-11 — Unsupported Key on a Brand Font File Entry

A files: entry of a source: file brand font sets a key Quarto does not support (such as format: or display:); it was ignored. The format() hint is derived from the file’s extension.

What this means

Each entry under a source: file font’s files: list is either a bare path or a map with path, weight, and style. The entry in question carries additional keys. The brand.yml specification has not settled what those keys mean, so rather than reject the brand or drop the keys silently, Quarto warns once per entry and renders as if the keys were absent.

The message names the brand file, the font family, the entry’s path, and the ignored keys.

Why this happens

  • format: — you wanted a format("woff2") hint in the @font-face rule. Quarto already derives that hint from the file’s extension (.woff2, .woff, .ttf, .otf), so the key is redundant.
  • display: — you wanted a font-display value. display: is supported on source: google and source: bunny fonts, where it becomes part of the request URL, but not yet on file fonts.
  • A typo for weight or style.

How to fix

Remove the key. For a format() hint, make sure the file has the right extension; for font-display on a local font, add the declaration in a custom SCSS or CSS file for now:

typography:
  fonts:
    - family: EB Garamond
      source: file
      files:
        - path: fonts/EBGaramond-Regular.woff2
          weight: 400
          style: normal
