Q-10-5 — Unresolved Partial Reference

A $partial(name)$ reference was not resolved during template compilation.

What this means

The template engine resolves partial references at compile time: each $partial("name")$ is replaced with the parsed body of the named partial. This error fires when an unresolved reference survives into the evaluation stage — the engine should have substituted it but did not.

In day-to-day use this presents as a missing-partial error from a different code path than Q-10-3. If you are seeing it and not also Q-10-3, the situation is likely a Quarto bug rather than a source-level mistake.

Why this happens

The unresolved reference reaches evaluation either because the compile-time resolution step was skipped (a programmatic caller bypassing the normal compile path) or because the resolution step silently dropped a reference it should have flagged.

How to fix

Confirm the partial exists, as you would for Q-10-3. If the partial is present and Q-10-3 is not also reported, report the template and the calling configuration at the Quarto issue tracker — the failure path is unusual.
