Q-3-54 — NoteDefinitionPara Not Supported in ANSI Format
Note definitions cannot be rendered in ANSI terminal output.
What this means
A note definition is the body of a footnote whose reference appears elsewhere in the document. The ANSI writer (used when rendering to a terminal) does not yet render footnotes: a terminal has no notion of a footnoted page, and the writer does not currently coalesce the body into the reference site either.
Why this happens
Your document uses note-definition syntax ([^id]: body) and
you rendered to ANSI output.
How to fix
Two options:
- Render to a different format. HTML, PDF, and the markdown writers all handle footnotes.
- Rewrite the footnote inline. Change
text[^id]plus[^id]: bodyintotext^[body], which puts the note body directly at the reference site.
