Multiple Formats in One Render Not Yet Supported
Q-20-8 — Multiple Formats in One Render Not Yet Supported
A
format:declares more than one output format. Rendering several formats in one invocation is not yet supported, so one was rendered and the others were skipped.
What this means
A document’s front matter, a _metadata.yml, or the project’s
_quarto.yml declared more than one key under format: (for example
format: {docx: default, html: default}). One q2 render invocation
produces one format. Quarto picked one of the declared formats — the
one you named with --to or -M format:<name>, otherwise the first key
declared — and the rest were skipped. This warning names which format was
rendered and which were skipped, so the skipped ones do not go missing
silently.
Naming one of the declared formats with --to or a scalar
-M format:<name> keeps the warning quiet: you made the choice.
Why this happens
- The
format:block was carried over from a Quarto 1 workflow, where all declared formats render in one pass. - The block is intentionally a menu of options, to be picked from with
--toon each invocation.
How to fix
- If you only ever want one of the declared formats, remove the others
from
format:and keep a single scalar or single-key map. - If you want several formats from the same source, render once per
format:
q2 render doc.qmd --to docx, thenq2 render doc.qmd --to html(or-M format:html).
