Q-12-8 — Listing Template File Missing
The path given as
template:does not exist or could not be read; the default built-in template is used instead.
What this means
A listing with type: custom and template: path/to/file
expects to find that file on disk, relative to the document
that hosts the listing. This error fires when Quarto tries to
read the file and the read fails — usually because the path is
wrong, the file is missing, or the process does not have
permission to read it.
The listing falls back to the default built-in template so
the document still renders, but the layout will not match what
the custom template would have produced.
Why this happens
Common causes:
- A typo in the path (
template: my-listng.template). - The file moved or was renamed but the
template:value was not updated. - A path relative to the wrong base.
template:is resolved relative to the host document, not to the project root.
How to fix
Confirm the file exists at the expected location. If you are not sure where Quarto is looking, try an absolute path temporarily — if that works, the original path was being resolved against the wrong base directory.
