Q-23-1 — Citeproc Resolves After Book Merge Point
A book chapter orders the built-in
citeprocfilter into.post(after thequartosentinel infilters:), so its citations resolve after this chapter pauses for project-wide crossref/bibliography aggregation.
What this means
A multi-file HTML book renders every chapter through
Normalization → Crossref → Navigation, then pauses so a
project-wide crossref registry and a merged, deduplicated
bibliography can be built from every chapter’s contribution before
any chapter resumes into Finalization. Harvesting a chapter’s cited
references for that merge happens at the same pause point, right
after this chapter’s own citeproc filter pass runs.
The filters: metadata key controls where each filter runs relative
to Quarto’s own built-in processing, using the quarto sentinel:
filters listed before it run in .pre (before this pause point),
filters listed after it run in .post (after it). When citeproc
is ordered into .post, this chapter’s citations are not resolved
yet when the pause happens — so its cited references are silently
missing from the book’s merged bibliography, even though the
chapter’s own in-text citations render normally later.
Why this happens
- A chapter (or the project’s shared
filters:config) explicitly listsciteprocafter thequartosentinel — usually because a custom filter needs to run before citeproc and the whole list was written in one order without considering book-merge timing.
How to fix
Move citeproc before the quarto sentinel in the filters: list
(in the chapter’s own front matter, or the project’s, whichever
declares it):
filters:
- citeproc
- quarto
- my-custom-filter.luaIf a custom filter genuinely needs to run after citeproc for a
single-document render, that ordering is not currently supported for
a book-merge or multi-file-HTML book chapter — citeproc must resolve
in .pre for this book’s bibliography merge to see the chapter’s
