Q-3-30 — Shortcode Not Supported

Quarto shortcodes are not representable in this output format.

What this means

A shortcode is a {{< name arg >}} construct that Quarto expands during rendering — {{< meta title >}} inserts the document title, {{< var key >}} inserts a value from _variables.yml, and so on. Expansion normally happens before the writer sees the AST.

This error fires when an unexpanded shortcode reaches the writer. The writer cannot pass it through (the syntax is Quarto-specific, not part of the output format), so it has no choice but to refuse.

Why this happens

Two known triggers:

  • The shortcode name is unknown. Quarto’s expander leaves unrecognized shortcodes in place rather than erasing them; the writer then sees the surviving node.
  • A Lua filter introduced a shortcode after the expansion pass. Shortcodes added after expansion will never run.

How to fix

Check the spelling of the shortcode name. If it is correct, confirm that the shortcode is one Quarto provides (meta, var, embed, include, …) or that the relevant extension is loaded.

For filter-introduced shortcodes, expand them inside the filter rather than emitting the shortcode node, or move the filter earlier in the pipeline so the expander runs again.
