Q-19-2 — Invalid Plot Document

The file an image refers to is not a hephaestus plot document this version of Quarto can read.

What this means

An image points at a file ending in .hep, Quarto read the file, but it is not a hephaestus plot document Quarto can rebuild. The image is left exactly as written and the rest of the page still renders; the browser then shows a broken image where the plot should be.

The message includes the reason hephaestus gave for refusing the file.

Why this happens

  • It is not a plot document at all. A file with the .hep extension that does not start with the hephaestus document magic — for example an empty file, or a download that returned an error page.
  • It was written by a newer library. The document format version is compared for equality: a .hep written by a newer hephaestus (typically through a newer R plotting package) than the one this Quarto links cannot be read. The hint names the version Quarto reads.
  • It uses custom geoms or named formatters. Those live in the program that wrote the document and cannot travel in the file, so the document cannot be rendered anywhere else.

How to fix

If the file is not a plot document, regenerate it. If the versions disagree, update Quarto to a release that reads the newer format (or write the document with a matching library version). A document that depends on custom geoms or formatters must be rendered by the program that produced it — export a PNG or SVG from there instead.
