Q-22-5 — Unbalanced Brace In Math
A
{in a math expression is never closed, or a}has no matching{.
What this means
Braces group arguments and sub-expressions. An unclosed { is closed at the end of the expression, which usually swallows more than intended; a stray } has nothing to close. Either way the intended structure is unknown, so the expression is reported and emitted verbatim in formats that need a conversion.
Why this happens
Common causes: a missing } after editing an argument, an escaped brace typed as a plain one (\{ x } when \{ x \} was meant), or a } left behind after removing a group.
How to fix it
Balance the braces. To typeset a literal brace, write \{ and \}.
Where it is reported
Math diagnostics point into the .qmd at the exact characters inside the
$…$ or $$…$$ block, including math that spans several lines or sits
inside a block quote or list item. When a \newcommand macro is involved,
a problem inside the macro body points at the definition and a problem in
a macro argument points at the use.
