Q-2-29 — Indented Footnote Content Not Supported

Pandoc-style indented footnote content does not work in Quarto markdown; use the ::: ^ref … ::: div syntax instead.

What this means

Pandoc supports a footnote-definition form where the content sits as an indented block beneath the reference:

Some text[^1].

[^1]:
    The footnote content, indented.

Quarto markdown does not parse that form. Instead, it represents footnote bodies as fenced divs labelled with the reference:

Some text[^1].

::: ^1
The footnote content.
:::

Why this happens

Most often the markdown was copied from a Pandoc document, or written by someone familiar with Pandoc but new to Quarto.

How to fix

Convert the indented body to the div form. The reference inside the div (^1 in the example) must match the reference in the text.

Example

Some text[^1].

[^1]:
    Body.
