Q-10-1 — Template Parse Error

A Quarto document template failed to parse.

What this means

Quarto’s document template engine reads Pandoc-flavored templates ($variable$, $if(x)$...$endif$, $partial(name)$, $x/pipe$). This error fires when the engine cannot parse a template at all — usually because of an unbalanced delimiter, an unrecognized control construct, or a syntactically malformed expression.

Without a parsable template, the surrounding render cannot continue: there is no fallback rendering for a template that cannot be read.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • A $ that was meant as a literal in non-template text. Literal dollar signs must be doubled: $$.
  • An unbalanced control block — $if(x)$ with no $endif$, or vice versa.
  • A typo in a control keyword ($endfi$ instead of $endif$).

How to fix

Read the error message — the engine names the position where parsing failed. Common fixes: balance the $if/$endif$ pair, escape literal $ characters, correct the keyword spelling.
