Q-9-8 — Invalid Attribute Value

A CSL attribute’s value is not one of the allowed options.

What this means

Many CSL attributes accept only a small fixed set of values. form on <cs:date> accepts numeric or text; font-style on a styling element accepts normal, italic, or oblique; and so on. This error fires when the attribute value does not match any of the allowed options. The message names the element, the attribute, the value found, and the values that were expected.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • A typo in the value (itlaic for italic).
  • A value from a different CSL version that has been renamed or removed.
  • An English word that resembles a CSL option but is not the exact accepted spelling.

How to fix

Replace the value with one of the allowed options shown in the message. If you are not sure which option to pick, the CSL specification documents the meaning of each accepted value for every attribute.
