Book projects render only to formats with book support.

What this means

A book project is not a bag of independent documents: chapters are numbered as one sequence, cross-references resolve across chapters, and single-file formats merge every chapter into one continuous document. Only formats that implement that machinery can render a book. In this version of Quarto those are:

  • html — each chapter renders as its own page (multi-file).
  • typst — chapters merge into a single compiled PDF.
  • epub — chapters merge into a single e-book.

The format you asked for is not one of these, so the render is rejected rather than silently producing disconnected per-chapter files with no book structure.

Why this happens

  • --to docx or --to pptx on a book. Quarto 1 produced one disconnected file per chapter for these formats — no shared numbering, no cross-chapter references — which Quarto 2 treats as “not a book format” rather than reproducing.
  • A format listed under format: in the book’s _quarto.yml that has no book support.

How to fix

Render to a supported format:

q2 render my-book --to html
q2 render my-book --to typst
q2 render my-book --to epub

If you need the chapters as standalone DOCX files, render the individual chapter documents directly rather than the book project.
