Q-22-9 — Unsupported Math Command

A math command is recognized but has no rendering in the target format, or is a document-level command that has no meaning inside math.

What this means

quarto-math knows the command (so this is not a typo) but cannot convert it: either the target format has no equivalent construct, or the command is not math at all (\cite, \label, \includegraphics inside $…$). The command is reported and the expression is emitted verbatim in formats that need a conversion.

Why this happens

Common causes: document commands pasted into an equation, LaTeX-only typesetting commands such as \raisebox, or bra-ket notation from the braket package.

How to fix it

Move document-level commands outside the math, or replace the construct with one the target supports. The diagnostic names the command and the reason.

Where it is reported

Math diagnostics point into the .qmd at the exact characters inside the $…$ or $$…$$ block, including math that spans several lines or sits inside a block quote or list item. When a \newcommand macro is involved, a problem inside the macro body points at the definition and a problem in a macro argument points at the use.
