Q-12-14 — Listing type: custom Without template: Path

A listing declares type: custom but no template: path; the default built-in is used instead.

What this means

A listing of type: custom needs a template: value pointing at the doctemplate that renders the items. With no template:, there is nothing custom about the listing — Quarto falls back to the default built-in template and emits this warning so the author knows the configuration is incomplete.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • A copy-paste mistake where type: custom was kept but the matching template: line was not.
  • A migration in progress — the author set type: custom intending to add the template path later.

How to fix

Either supply a template: path:

listing:
  type: custom
  template: my-template.template

or change type: to one of the built-in types (default, grid, table) if you did not need a custom template after all.
