Q-16-1 — Extension not loaded
An
_extension.ymlmanifest could not be read or parsed, so the extension it describes is not active for this render.
What this means
Every extension is described by an _extension.yml manifest under
_extensions/. Quarto reads each manifest to learn what the extension
contributes — shortcodes, filters, formats, project types. If a
manifest cannot be read or parsed, Quarto skips that extension
entirely and renders without it.
The render continues. What you notice is the absence: a shortcode the
extension provided now reports
Q-16-3 at its use site, a custom format is unknown, a
filter never runs. Those downstream symptoms are often what sends you
looking, which is why this warning names both the manifest file and
the underlying cause.
Why this happens
- A YAML syntax error in the manifest — usually inconsistent indentation, or an unquoted value containing a colon.
- A manifest at the wrong path. The file must be at
_extensions/<name>/_extension.ymlor_extensions/<organization>/<name>/_extension.yml. - An incomplete install. An extension copied by hand, or a partial
git cloneof an extension repository. - Permissions. The file exists but is not readable by the process running Quarto.
How to fix
Open the manifest named in the message and check it parses as YAML. A minimal, valid manifest looks like this:
title: My Extension
author: Your Name
version: 1.0.0
contributes:
shortcodes:
- shortcode.luaIf the extension came from a repository, reinstalling is usually faster than repairing by hand:
q2 add <owner>/<repo>If q2 add installed the extension and reports that its files have
local changes, add --force to replace them.
If the manifest is one you are writing, note that contributes: must
be a mapping — a list under contributes: is a common and easily
missed mistake.
