The pandoc binary found on PATH reports a version older than the minimum this Quarto version requires.

What this means

Quarto found a pandoc binary, but its reported version is below the floor this Quarto release requires for the docx/pptx Pandoc-hybrid render path. Older pandoc releases don’t ship the Lua filter APIs (or bug fixes) this path depends on, so rendering does not proceed.

Why this happens

  • Pandoc was installed some time ago and has not been upgraded since.
  • A system package manager ships an older pandoc than the one this Quarto release was tested against.
  • Multiple pandoc binaries exist on the machine, and PATH resolves to an older one.

How to fix

Upgrade pandoc to the required version or newer — see pandoc.org for platform-specific install instructions. If multiple pandoc installations exist, check which one PATH resolves to (which pandoc on macOS/Linux, where pandoc on Windows) and either update PATH or set QUARTO_PANDOC to the newer binary’s path.
