Q-7-7 — No Renderable Files Matched

An input directory or glob matched no renderable files.

What this means

When you pass a directory path or a glob pattern to quarto render, Quarto expands it to a list of renderable files (.qmd, .md, and similar). This error fires when the expansion is empty — the directory has no .qmd files in it, or the glob matched only non-renderable files.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • A glob that does not match anything — quarto render docs/*.qmd in a directory with no .qmd files at the top level.
  • A directory holding only output files (_site/) and no sources.
  • A typo in the directory name — Quarto found the directory but it was not the one you meant.

How to fix

Check what the glob expands to from the shell (ls docs/*.qmd). If that command lists no files, your glob is the problem; if it lists files but Quarto still reports none, the files may be hidden or underscore-prefixed (which Quarto excludes by default).
