Lua Filter Diagnostic
Q-11-1 — Lua Filter Diagnostic
A Lua filter emitted a diagnostic message during execution.
What this means
Quarto supports Lua filters — small Lua programs that
transform the document AST between parsing and rendering. A
filter can emit diagnostics of its own through Quarto’s filter
API: warnings the user should see, errors that abort the run.
Every such diagnostic surfaces with code Q-11-1. The
underlying filter is the source of the message.
This single code covers every filter-emitted diagnostic because the meaning is determined by the filter, not by Quarto. The accompanying message and (when available) source location come from the filter author.
Why this happens
The trigger is entirely filter-specific. Common patterns:
- Input the filter could not process — a node shape the filter did not anticipate.
- A precondition violation — a metadata key the filter expected to find was missing.
- A deliberate authoring constraint — the filter checks the document against a project-specific style rule and reports violations.
How to fix
Read the filter’s message — it is the authoritative source for
what to do. If the filter does not document its diagnostics,
the filter’s source code (.lua file) is the next place to
look.
