Q-0-99 — Generic Error

A fallback error code used when no more specific code applies.

What this means

Q-0-99 is the catalog’s catch-all: an error reached the diagnostic system without being classified under one of the more specific codes. It is reserved for situations where the emitting code path has not yet been wired into the catalog, and serves as a placeholder until a real code is assigned.

If you encounter this code in the wild, the underlying problem is not necessarily an internal bug — it might be a perfectly ordinary error that Quarto has not yet given a proper code. The diagnostic message that accompanies the code is the authoritative description of what went wrong.

Why this happens

The trigger varies entirely with the underlying error. Q-0-99 indicates that the emitter chose not to (or could not) classify the condition further.

How to fix

Treat the message as the primary information. If the message points at a user-fixable problem (a malformed file, a missing configuration option), fix that. If the message points at an internal failure, treat it like a Q-0-1 and report it.

In either case, an issue at the Quarto tracker noting that the error surfaced as Q-0-99 is useful — it points the maintainers at a code path that should be promoted to a specific code.
