Q-5-14 — project.render Pattern Outside the Project Root

A project.render pattern’s .. segments climb above the project root, so it matches nothing.

What this means

project.render patterns resolve against the project root — the directory holding _quarto.yml. A pattern may contain .. segments, but the result must stay inside the project. A pattern like ../shared/*.qmd refers to files the project does not contain, so it matches nothing and this warning fires.

Why this happens

Usually a pattern copied from a sibling project, or written when _quarto.yml lived one directory deeper.

How to fix

Adjust the pattern so it stays within the project directory. A project renders only its own files; to render documents that live outside the project tree, either move them into the project or give them a project of their own.

Note that a leading / is not a filesystem path — it anchors the pattern at the project root, which is where patterns resolve anyway:

project:
  render:
    - "/index.qmd" # the project's own index.qmd
