Q-3-50 — LineBlock Not Supported in ANSI Format

LineBlock elements cannot be rendered in ANSI terminal output.

What this means

A line block is a block of text written with leading | characters, where each line is preserved as a separate line in the output — useful for verse, addresses, or other line-broken prose. The ANSI writer (used when rendering to a terminal) does not yet support this construct, and emits the error rather than silently flattening the lines into a paragraph.

Why this happens

Your document contains a line block (lines beginning with |) and you rendered to ANSI output.

How to fix

Two options:

  • Render to a different format. HTML, PDF, and the other markdown writers handle line blocks correctly.
  • Rewrite the line block as a paragraph with hard line breaks (two trailing spaces, or a backslash at end of line) if the visual result is acceptable for your use case.
