Q-3-1 — IO Error During Write
An I/O error occurred while writing rendered output to its destination.
What this means
Quarto produced a complete document but could not finish writing it. The render itself succeeded; the failure is in the step that hands bytes to the filesystem (or another sink). The underlying operating-system error is included in the message.
Why this happens
Common causes:
- Permission denied on the output file or its parent directory.
- Disk full, or a quota limit reached on the volume that holds the output.
- A missing parent directory for the output path. Quarto does not create intermediate directories implicitly.
- The output file is locked by another process (a viewer, an editor, a sync client).
How to fix
Read the OS error after Failed to write output: — it names the
specific cause (Permission denied, No space left on device,
No such file or directory, …). The fix depends on the cause:
- For permission errors, confirm you have write access to the output directory.
- For missing-directory errors, create the parent directory first.
- For locked files, close the application holding the file.
