Q-10-6 — Unknown Pipe

A template applied a pipe name the engine does not recognize.

What this means

Pandoc-flavored templates apply transformations through pipes: $name/uppercase$ runs name through the uppercase pipe, $x/left 10$ pads x to width 10 with left alignment, and so on. This error fires when the pipe name does not match any pipe the engine knows about. The template’s strict-mode setting determines whether the diagnostic is a warning or an error; either way, the variable’s value is passed through unchanged.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • A typo in the pipe name ($x/uppercas$).
  • A pipe from a different template engine (Liquid, Jinja, Handlebars) that does not exist in Pandoc templates.
  • A pipe that was removed or renamed between Quarto versions.

How to fix

Replace the pipe with one that exists. The Pandoc template documentation lists the available pipes; common ones include uppercase, lowercase, pairs, length, left, right, center, alpha, roman.
