Page Is Not a Chapter of the Book
Q-5-41 — Page Is Not a Chapter of the Book
A page that is not in the book’s chapter list was rendered on its own.
What this means
A book is built from the files listed in book.chapters. The page you named is
in the project but is not in that list, so it has no place in the book. Quarto
renders it on its own, as a standalone document, and tells you so. Because it
is not part of the book, the page has its own numbering (its first heading is
number 1), and it cannot link to the book’s chapters.
This notice is informational. You see it whenever you render a page like this
by name, whether you asked for the page alone (-M book-scope:chapter), set
book-scope: chapter in a configuration file or in the page itself, or asked
for nothing in particular. If you ask for the whole book with
-M book-scope:book, the page still renders on its own, and you get the
warning Q-5-48 instead.
How to fix
If the page belongs in the book, list it:
book:
chapters:
- index.qmd
- notes.qmdIf it is meant to be standalone, no action is needed.
