Q-10-7 — Invalid Pipe Arguments

A template pipe received arguments it cannot accept.

What this means

Several template pipes take arguments — $x/left 10$ needs a width, $x/alpha$ needs its input to be a positive integer, and so on. This error fires when the pipe’s arguments (or the input value) are not of the shape the pipe needs. The template’s strict-mode setting determines whether the diagnostic is a warning or an error; the value passes through unchanged.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • A width pipe given a non-integer width ($x/left "ten"$).
  • An alpha: or roman: pipe given a non-positive-integer value ($x/alpha$ where x is a string).
  • Too few or too many arguments for the pipe’s signature.

How to fix

Check the pipe’s expected arguments against the Pandoc template documentation. If the input is the problem, transform the value upstream (or set it with a sensible default) so the pipe receives what it expects.
