Q-12-6 — listing: false Not Allowed

listing: false is not allowed; remove the key entirely instead.

What this means

To turn a page into a listing, set the listing: key in its front matter to a non-false value. To not have a listing on a page, omit the key. Quarto does not treat listing: false as “turn listings off on this page” — there is nothing to turn off when the key is absent.

The parser emits this warning rather than silently treating listing: false as the absence of the key, because both interpretations are plausible and the user should pick.

Why this happens

Most often the author is trying to override a setting from a parent _metadata.yml or _quarto.yml that turns on a listing project-wide. Setting listing: false looks like a natural override but is not the supported way to opt out.

How to fix

To opt out of a project-wide listing on a single page, instead of listing: false, override the relevant project-level setting in a different way — for example, by changing the project’s listing scope or by moving the page out of the listing directory.

If the goal was simply “don’t make this page a listing,” delete the listing: line from the front matter.
