A file listed in book.chapters, book.appendices, or book.references does not exist on disk.

What this means

Unlike a website project — which renders every document it finds — a book project renders exactly the files named by its chapter list. Every entry in book.chapters, book.appendices, and book.references must therefore point at a real file in the project directory. One of them does not.

Paths are resolved relative to the project root (the directory containing _quarto.yml).

Why this happens

• A typo in the chapter path — chaptres/intro.qmd instead of chapters/intro.qmd.
• A chapter was renamed or moved without updating _quarto.yml.
• A new chapter was added to the list but the file was never created.

How to fix

Create the missing file, or correct the entry in _quarto.yml:

book:
  title: "My Book"
  chapters:
    - index.qmd
    - intro.qmd     # must exist in the project directory
    - summary.qmd

If you meant to drop the chapter, remove its entry from the list.
