link-format request cannot be honored
Q-13-9 — link-format request cannot be honored
A link carries a
link-formatattribute that names an unknown value or targets a page the requested output format does not cover. The attribute is ignored and the link resolves as if it were undecorated.
What this means
The link-format attribute selects which output of a target page
a link should point at. On a website with llms-txt: true, every
page has two outputs: the HTML page and its markdown companion.
[View as Markdown](guide/index.qmd){link-format="llms"}
[Interactive demo](demo.qmd){link-format="html"}
The first form makes the rendered HTML page link to the target’s
markdown companion (guide/index.md). The second keeps a link
pointing at the HTML page even inside markdown companions, which
otherwise rewrite same-site links to their .md siblings.
This warning fires when the request cannot be satisfied. The render still succeeds: the attribute is dropped and the link resolves exactly as it would without it.
Why this happens
Common causes:
link-format="llms"withoutllms-txt: true. Markdown companions only exist when the website setswebsite.llms-txt: truein_quarto.yml.- The target has no markdown companion. Draft pages and the 404
page are excluded from companion generation, so a
llmspin on a link to them cannot be honored. - The link target is not a project source path.
link-formatonly applies to links written against a source file in the project (guide/index.qmd-style). External URLs, anchors, and static resources have a single form — there is no alternate output to select. - An unknown value. Only
htmlandllmsare recognized today.
How to fix
- To link markdown companions, set
llms-txt: trueunderwebsite:in_quarto.yml. - Write the link target as the target page’s source path
(
guide/index.qmd), not its output path or an external URL. - If the target is a draft, the companion does not exist — remove the pin or publish the page.
- Check the attribute value for typos:
link-format="html"orlink-format="llms".
