Q-7-6 — Input Excluded From Render List

The named input is inside a Quarto project but the project’s render list excludes it.

What this means

A Quarto project can opt into rendering only a subset of its files via project.render in _quarto.yml, and Quarto skips files that match the conventions for hidden or in-progress content (filenames starting with _ or .). This error fires when you pass an explicit path to a file that is otherwise excluded — Quarto refuses to render it, because the project’s configuration says it shouldn’t.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • An underscore-prefixed file (_draft.qmd) — these are excluded by convention.
  • A file outside an explicit project.render list — when project.render is set, only listed paths render.
  • A hidden directory (.hidden/) — files inside hidden directories are excluded too.

How to fix

Either:

  • Render without naming the file, if you want the project’s exclusion to stand.
  • Rename or move the file out of the excluded position.
  • Update project.render in _quarto.yml to include the file.
