Q-12-1 — Custom Listing Template Not Yet Supported

A listing configuration value is unrecognized or in a shape the parser does not yet handle.

What this means

The listing: key in a document’s front matter (or under website.listing: in _quarto.yml) accepts several shapes: a boolean, a type-name string (default, grid, table, custom, metadata), an object with a richer set of fields, or an array of such objects. This error fires when the value does not match any of those shapes, or when an inner field (such as field-types) uses a name the parser does not recognize.

The listing falls back to the default type so the rest of the document still renders, but the unrecognized configuration is ignored.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • Misspelled type name. Writing type: gird instead of type: grid.
  • A field whose value is the wrong shape. For example, field-types: whose entries are not one of date, string, number, minutes.
  • A configuration form Quarto does not yet support. Some Quarto 1 listing options are not yet implemented in Quarto 2.

How to fix

Check the type name and the inner field values against the listing reference. If you are migrating from Quarto 1, expect a small number of options to land later in Quarto 2 — confirm the option is supported before using it.
