Unbalanced Left And Right Delimiters
\left has no matching \right, or a \right has no matching \left, in the same math expression.
Q-22-6 — Unbalanced Left And Right Delimiters
A
\lefthas no matching\right, or a\righthas no matching\left, in the same math expression.
What this means
\left( … \right) produces delimiters that grow with their content; the two must pair up within one expression (and within one environment cell). When one is missing the group’s extent is unknown, so the expression is reported and emitted verbatim in formats that need a conversion.
Why this happens
Common causes: a \right deleted by mistake, a \left and its \right split across two cells of an aligned environment by an & or \\, or a \right. (invisible delimiter) forgotten after \left..
How to fix it
Add the missing side. Use \left. or \right. for an invisible delimiter, and keep both sides in the same cell of an environment.
Where it is reported
Math diagnostics point into the .qmd at the exact characters inside the
$…$ or $$…$$ block, including math that spans several lines or sits
inside a block quote or list item. When a \newcommand macro is involved,
a problem inside the macro body points at the definition and a problem in
a macro argument points at the use.
