Q-9-7 — Missing Required Attribute

A CSL element is missing an attribute that its schema requires.

What this means

Many CSL elements have required attributes. <cs:macro> requires name, <cs:style> requires version, <cs:term> requires name. This error fires when one of those required attributes is missing. The message names both the element and the attribute.

Why this happens

Common causes:

  • A hand-edited CSL style where the attribute was deleted by mistake.
  • A style copied from an incomplete example.
  • A migration from an older CSL version where the attribute was not yet required.

How to fix

Add the attribute. The message tells you both which element is incomplete and which attribute is missing, so the fix is mechanical. The official CSL specification lists every required attribute per element.
