Q-12-22 — Listing Record Key Looks Misspelled

A key in an inline contents: record is a near-miss of a listing field; it was kept as a custom field.

What this means

An inline contents: record’s curated keys (title:, description:, image:, and so on) are typed into the item’s built-in fields; every other key is forwarded, verbatim, into item.extra for custom templates to read. That forwarding is silent by design — custom fields are a supported feature — so a typo’d curated key is otherwise invisible: it doesn’t error, it just quietly becomes a custom field the built-in templates never look at.

This warning flags a key that is close to a known listing field name, on the theory that it is more likely a typo than a deliberate custom field.

Why this happens

Common near-misses:

listing:
  contents:
    - title: Get started
descripton: Download and install # meant `description:`
Title: duplicate case-typo of title # meant `title:`

The check compares each unrecognized key against the curated field names using edit distance (insertions, deletions, substitutions, and adjacent-character swaps each count as one edit): keys of 5 characters or fewer must match within 1 edit, longer keys within 2. name is 2 edits from date and is not flagged — short, unrelated words don’t trigger it.

How to fix

  • If the key was meant to be a curated field, rename it:

    listing:
      contents:
        - title: Get started
          description: Download and install
  • If the key is intentional — a custom template reads item.descripton on purpose — no change is needed; the warning does not block rendering, and the key still reaches item.extra either way.
