Q-2-7 — Unclosed Single Quote

A single-quoted construct opens with ' but no closing ' appears before the end of the block.

What this means

Quarto markdown recognizes '…' as a typographic single-quote pair (curly quotes in the output) when the quotes are balanced within a block. This error fires when an opening ' has no matching close.

Why this happens

The most common cause is an apostrophe being read as an opening quote. The parser distinguishes apostrophes from quotes by context, but in some constructions (a ' adjacent to whitespace or at the start of a token) the parser sees a quote opener.

How to fix

Add the closing ', or escape the literal apostrophe with a backslash:

He said it was \'just a draft\'.

If the construct really is a quote, supply the missing closing mark.

Example

A bare ' with nothing after it triggers the error:

'
