Q-12-21 — Listing Record Has No Title

An inline contents: record has neither title: nor path:; the item renders with an empty title.

What this means

A listing’s contents: can name inline records directly, instead of (or alongside) glob patterns matching project documents:

listing:
  contents:
    - title: Get started
      path: download.qmd

The record is the item — there is no document behind it to fall back on for a title, unless path: names one. This warning fires when a record has neither: nothing tells the listing what to display, so the item’s title is empty.

Why this happens

  • The record was meant to be a short standalone entry (an external link, a call-to-action card) and title: was simply forgotten.
  • The record was meant to overlay a project document — the author intended path: to supply the title from the document, but left path: out too, so there is nothing to derive a title from at all.

How to fix

Add title: to the record:

listing:
  contents:
    - title: Get started
      description: Download and install

Or, if the record is meant to link to a project document, add path: — the item then falls back to the document’s title (or the file name, if the document has none):

listing:
  contents:
    - path: download.qmd
