Website breadcrumbs

Overview

Website pages that appear in a sidebar get a breadcrumb trail above their title, showing the path of sidebar sections that leads to the page:

Guide › Advanced › Deep Page

Each crumb is a link. Section crumbs link to the section’s first entry (or to the section’s own href: when it has one), and the current page appears as the final crumb, linked to itself.

Breadcrumbs are enabled by default whenever a page belongs to a sidebar and sits at least one section deep. Top-level pages — whose trail would contain only themselves — don’t show one.

Disabling breadcrumbs

Turn breadcrumbs off for the whole site in _quarto.yml:

website:
  bread-crumbs: false

Or for a single page, in its front matter:

---
title: My Page
bread-crumbs: false
---

Notes

  • Breadcrumbs are shown on wide viewports as part of the page’s title block. (Quarto 1 also shows a compact breadcrumb bar on narrow viewports; that bar is not yet available.)
  • The trail is derived from the sidebar structure, so a page that doesn’t appear in any sidebar has no breadcrumbs.
